Hotel Performance March 2020

AHATA: COVID-19 had a drastic effect on March tourism

Aruba Hotel & Tourism Association (AHATA)  confirmed that the COVID-19 crisis affected tourism drastically in the month of March already.

Occupancy: Hotel occupancy dropped by 48.4 points compared to March 2019, to an occupancy rate of 41.7%. This low level of occupancy causes operational financial losses.

ADR: The Average Daily Rate for March 2020 was 3.5% lower than the year prior, at $333.25.

RevPAR: Revenue Per Available Room in March 2020 was $138.93, which is a 55.4% drop compared to a year ago.

The crisis cut our tourism in half in the month of March, and it is widely known that in April we are down to 0 tourists and 0 income for hotels and other AHATA member companies. AHATA projects that the lack of tourism arrivals shall continue for a few months, and that recovery trajectory will be long after the borders reopen. Reality is that there are many businesses that are not able to survive a few months with no revenue.

This unprecedented crisis requires immediate action by the government, to offer a relief package to all of private sector and secure the opportunity for as many companies as possible to be able to open back up and keep offering employment in the future.  No commerce means no employment and no revenue for the government’s budget. Aruba’s government needs to display responsibility during this immense crisis and lower its expenses drastically. More than ever is it time for our leaders to show vision, wisdom, responsibility and decisive action to safeguard our future wellbeing.
